Lenny Kravitz To Play Marvin Gaye in Biopic

Lenny Kravitz is set to play Motown legend Marvin Gaye in an upcoming biopic. Deadline reports that the actor and Grammy-winning singer, who had a supporting role in The Hunger Games, will take on his first leading role in the film, directed by Julien Temple.

According to Deadline, the currently untitled film focuses on Gaye’s time in London during the 1980s, "when the soul singer attempted to get his addictions under control and career back on track." Production starts next year.

Temple, a music video and documentary director, is the latest in a series of filmmakers to attempt the adaptation of Gaye’s life for the big screen. In 2008, director F. Gary Gray tried to develop a film called Marvin. After that production stalled, former Law and Order star Jesse L. Martin was set to star in Sexual Healing, to be produced by The Sopranos’ James Gandolfini.

Kravitz can next be seen reprising his role in The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, due in theaters November 22, 2013.
